The beautiful landscape of Moab is vivid with color year-round, even when there’s snow on the ground. While people will come for the fun and challenging slopes at Utah’s many ski resorts, you can create a vacation and ski experience all your own, and you won’t miss the views and thrills to be had skiing Moab’s backcountry.

Mount Mellenthin

Part of the La Sal Mountain Range – the second-highest mountains in Utah, Mount Mellenthin is one of the most challenging backcountry ski adventures you’ll have. Plan hiking most of the day to get to the summit, where you’ll find breathtaking views that include panoramas of other mountain ranges, and the national parks. The slope angle is up to 15 degrees in some spots along the vertical descent of 2,000 feet over a six-mile distance. It’s a not a trip to be taken alone, and you’ll want to prepare for hard-packed snow and ice near the summit.

Mount Tuk

The mountain is an over 12,000-foot summit with beautiful views and a challenging climb and backcountry ski adventure. The Backside of Tuk features a 2,500-foot ski run called Tukulear Reaction that drops from the summit to La Sal Pass Road. There’s also the 210 degrees, a descent of 3,200-feet, and the 260 degrees, a nearly 3,700-foot descent, both accessed from Hell’s Canyon or East La Sall Pass Road.

Mount Peale

There is no established trail to hike up Mount Peale, so you’ll want to plan a route as well as make changes to that route as the weather changes. The summit is over 12,700 feet and provides breathtaking views before you ski down the six-mile path to the base.
